Our Eco Warriors

At Seagrave School we consider our environment is our responsibility and have Eco Warriors that look at all aspects of the school.

The Eco Warriors monitor and record on a weekly basis the school's water and energy usage and make suggestions on how we can improve. They meet regularly and seek the opinions of other children and act on them, where appropriate.

As a school we recycle and reuse as much as possible. As part of this we also maintain a school garden. We use the garden as part of our curriculum and have started a project 'From seed to plate' where the children grow harvest, prepare, cook and eat vegetables.

In August we received a calendar of Eco Days and Campaigns for 2010/11 from Charnwood Borough Council. To encourage schools around the county to take part in as many of these events as possible.  Our school has worked through the events and committed to some of them. We will feature these on the web site, as and when we participate in the events.

As part of Charnwood's Christmas campaign they would be having a big Christmas light switch-on in the town centre on Sunday 28th November. Timmy (the sheep) from Timmy Time on CBeebies is switching the lights on, therefore, as part of this switch-on, their arts and culture department have asked a few local Primary Schools if they would be interested in decorating a frame structured free standing sheep (roughly 3 foot high) with recycled materials to display at the event and then the sheep will be displayed in the shop windows in Church Gate, Loughborough.

Our school was thrilled to be asked and when we took delivery of the sheep the children got straight on with decorating it. The Eco Warriors and Year 4 pupils decided to decorate it with cut up plastic bags and rags. The children came up with a name of 'Peggy Mitchell'.

The school has recently been informed that our 'Peggy Mitchell' sheep had come second place in the competition and won £30, the money is to be used to support and develop an area of our eco development. Click on the photos below to see the before and after!
